Our human desire for surrender & a practice

Sovereign Studios meditationwear, from a reflection on surrender and practice

You Can Surrender

There’s a quiet truth that many of us spend years resisting:

We want something to surrender to.

Not in the sense of giving up our agency or abandoning our discernment. But in the deeper sense of being able to soften our grip. To trust, rest, and let ourselves be held by something larger than our own constant effort.

We see this desire everywhere.

It’s what we long for in our most intimate relationships—the feeling that we don’t have to carry everything alone. It’s why devotion, faith, and ritual have appeared in every culture throughout history. It’s why even those of us who don't identify as religious often find ourselves seeking meaning, structure, and connection in other forms.

We're taught to stay in control, to have answers, and to anticipate every outcome before we move.

But what if surrender isn't the opposite of power? What if it's the doorway to it?

Dialogue With The Unknown

Recently, our founder wrote about an unexpected impulse that emerged after years of meditation: a desire to pray.

"There is something about surrender, devotion, and reverence that is so sacred, and such a part of the human experience. Every religion and culture gets to it in their own way."

What stood out wasn't finding a definitive answer. It was discovering that the practice itself mattered. The willingness to kneel before the mystery. To stay in dialogue with the unknown. To trust without needing certainty.

Many of us spend our lives believing strength comes from holding everything together. But eventually we discover that so much of our suffering comes from resisting what is already here—reacting to every challenge, trying to force clarity where none exists, demanding guarantees from a world that has never offered them.

Here lies the paradox of surrender.

The more we release our grip, the more grounded we become. The less we need life to unfold a certain way, the more fully we can participate in it. The less energy we spend protecting ourselves from the unknown, the more energy we have to create, connect, and serve.

Practice isn't about becoming passive, it's about becoming unshakable.
